Homemade Graham Crackers

easy to make, healthier than store-bought and super tasty!!

Every once and a while I get ambitious and decide to make some of our favorite snack foods from scratch – it makes me feel like some sort of Domestic Goddess/Super Mom and is a much cheaper and healthier alternative the store-bought stuff.

Well, today was one of those days. The hubby is out of town on business, school has started up again, I was caught up on laundry and the dishes were done, so I decided to use my “free time” to bake something.

I decided on graham crackers since they are the perfect toddler snack food. Plus, they sounded pretty good to me at the time, we didn’t have any in the pantry but had all the ingredients. So I problem solved and made my own.

They are surprisingly easy to make so no need to be intimidated – Nabisco has nothing on you and your skills!!

What you’ll need:

1 cup butter (softened)

¾ cup brown sugar

½ teaspoon salt

3 Tablespoons honey

3 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

2 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a large bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, vanilla and honey. Mix until blended.

Gradually add in flour until incorporated and mixed through.

If dough is too crumbly add a little bit of water.

Roll out the dough in between a baking mat and some plastic wrap to about 1/8” thickness.

Sprinkle generously with some cinnamon and sugar. Then cut into individual sizes and use a fork to make holes in each cracker.

Freeze for 30 minutes to harden

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Line a cookie sheet with silicone or parchment paper and place crackers about 2” apart.

Bake for anywhere from 10-20 minutes depending on how you like your grahams. I like mine crunch, not soft, so I bake closer to the 20-minute mark. The great thing about this recipe is that you can pull the crackers out of the oven, let them cool completely to see how done they are and then pop them back in the oven if they aren’t done enough to your liking.

Store in an air tight container.
